It’s always heartwarming to see the success of colleagues as they tackle new ventures and continue to reach higher. This post casts the spotlight on a couple of travel bloggers who started around the same time I did, Nathan and Sofia of As We Travel, and who have recently released their first e-book, The Pre:Travel Guide. I gladly accepted their invitation to review the guide, which is available now for the promotional price of $9.95.

Nathan and Sofia wrote The Pre:Travel Guide to capture the lessons they learned on their eight-month round-the-world (RTW) trip in 2008 and share them with travelers planning their own RTW trip.

This is your chance to learn hard lessons the easy way.

The Pre:Travel Guide is an easy read. It’s written and designed to make information as accessible as possible. Pages are light on text and allow you to quickly skim over sections in search of relevant nuggets. This e-book covers a lot of ground, from planning to packing to logistics to health, and tries to provide the necessary information to give you a leg up on your journey. Some of the sections felt a bit light on actionable content, but I almost always found an insightful bit of advice or idea I hadn’t considered before. I really liked how they used examples from their own travels to illustrate many of the points.

The Pre:Travel Guide

I particularly liked that they included a section on finding your travel inspiration. You might think that’s not usually a problem, but I can say from experience that it is extremely hard to shake once you’re afflicted by it. Last year Sarah and I went on a five-week sabbatical to Portugal and Scotland, but leading up to it I simply wasn’t feeling any particular place. I wanted to travel, but I didn’t know where.

The Pre:Travel Guide also contains some helpful sections on RTW routes and spending examples. Here’s one nugget I think is particularly brilliant: pack your bag and live out of it for a week before you leave. Tweak your packing list and travel happily ever after.

The Pre:Travel Guide makes a good introduction to planning a RTW trip. It covers the key aspects of preparing for a trip of this length at a foundational level that is easily accessible. The book is a bit longer than it needs to be, making the process of finding critical information more difficult, and some sections like Scams need to be beefed up or cut altogether. I would recommend this e-book to new backpackers seeking to quickly get up to speed with the details of a round-the-world trip.

Seems like such a great e-book. I normally steer away from them, but would consider this one. Particularly as I am preparing for a possible RTW in ’11. Thanks for reviewing this book!
