It's becoming more and more common, and what it gives you (beyond using the iPhone offline) is instant omniscience - which makes an incredible difference while travelling, if you use it right =) The spontaneity it enables alone... If I could wax more lyrical, I'd probably turn into singing candle. I'm an Australian, and before it was easy to buy an unlocked iPhone here in Europe, I bought my 3Gs through Vodafone AU and had it shipped to me here. Last time I looked, about 8 months ago, you could buy it up front from Voda, then pay a bit extra ($80 AUD) to get it unlocked (which just happens magically once you ask them to do it) An iPhone’s definitely what I’d be recommending, Caz.
